Inspiring the children of Bradford to write Poetry!

It's National Poetry Day 4th October so I have been busy planning the next Home Education group meet up for Monday 10:30am at Manningham Library, Bradford which will be all about Poems and getting kiddies into Poetry. I have invited our local poet, Sheena Hussain from Allerton, Bradford, to come along and join in the fun!

Sheena is the author of her debut poetry collection published as a result of her health adversity. Sheena, as a poet, is championing writing for wellbeing. She is the creative spark behind her new business Poetry by Sheena Poetry by Name  which is a new poetry writing service that she offers. Sheena is using her new platform to engage with organisations by way of delivering workshops to inspire people to write poetry and connect with personal thought, which in turn will help their wellbeing.

Sheena has written a special Autumn song especially for the children that attend the Home Education Group meet up, which she will be singing to the group next week. She will also be introducing rhyme to the younger children through a practical game called 'Pear with letters' where the children will rearrange words to pair up the ones that rhyme. We will also have some Autumn acrostic poem sheets for the older children and pumpkin rhyming word sheets to colour for the younger ones as well as some pumpkin pictures to decorate for the library windows.

She is also the founder of a new poetry competition Poem:99, wholly for the children of Bradford, which she will be talking to the group about:

'I am delighted and humbled to announce that the children of Bradford have a brand new Poetry competition to get their teeth stuck into. Summer holidays maybe coming to and end but there is 8 weeks of fun awaiting for these young minds to unleash their creativity and write poetry about 'Bradford'. To inspire the young minds why not write about your vision of the old historic Bradford Odeon Cinema, maybe you've had happy memories in Lister's very own park, or how about the apple tree in your back garden, or the coriander growing out of control in your granddads allotment - the ideas are endless.  So go on children what are you waiting for; get writing, get rhyming you budding poets and poetesses. Although I wont be judging i'm also like the judges looking forward to reading your entries and don't forget in each category there are prizes to be won courtesy of Nafees Bakers and Sweets since 1979.  Good Luck.'  Sheena Hussain

A big Thank You to Sheena for getting involved in next week's HE meet up and I hope to see you all there! :)

and as Sheena says:
