Home Ed Q&A with Daniela

Another lovely Home Ed Q&A session here with Daniela!!

Enjoy :)

When and why did you decide to Home Educate?

I decided to homeschool when my daughter was a baby. She has a food allergy and I wanted to create a safe learning environment for her. In sha Allah.

What kind of approach do you take?

We are kind of all over the place. Currently focusing on play, teaching manners and learning Spanish. I guess you can say unschooling.

Where do the children do most of their work? and do they distract each other?
She does most of her work at home. If she wants to write a letter, play doctor or read a book..I go with the flow and try to encourage learning and independence.

What is your favourite thing about Home Education?
You can do it whenever, wherever!

What subjects do you teach and do you stick to a timetable?
Currently focusing on phonics, writing and spanish.  No. I did in the past but it became a struggle to keep her on a strict schedule which took away some of the fun.

What do you find most difficult and why?

How do you incorporate Physical Education into your Home Ed days?

We try to get outdoors everyday. Whether it be a walk, bike ride or skate session, it just makes for a better day! In sha Allah

Do you plan and how  far in advance?

I plan to homeschool as long as I can. She speaks about attending school since her closest cousin attends school. Allah is the best of planners so we shall see.

What's a typical Home Ed day like?

 Breakfast & cartoons

With lots of hands on learning and reading squeezed into it anytime anywhere.
Do you spend a lot of money on resources?

Used to but not anymore. Sometimes less is more. Am trying to approach it more minimalistic now. You don’t really need a lot. There are so many free resources online, in person such as the library and the dollar store can be your best friend!

How do you make time for yourself?

This is the tough part for me. At night, when the kids are asleep is my me time.

What advice would you give to someone just starting their Home Ed journey?

Allowing her to choose the topics and activities. Sometimes mama just wants to paint or color haha!

How do you react to people asking about socialisation, do your children easily socialise and work well with others?

I tell them there are so many activities outside of school she has many opportunities to socialize. She is mature for her age and not shy to make new friends Alhamdulillah

Have family supported your decision?
In the beginning, my family was a bit hesitant because I was in school since pre-k, but they support us now!

What advice would you give to new Home Edders?
Don’t get overwhelmed because there are so many homeschooling methods. Honestly, just go with what your child enjoys the most and you will see how they flourish in sha Allah! And just being outdoors provides some of the greatest learning adventures.
