Chai Chat!.........with The Goodswen Family

When and why did you decide to Home Educate?

We only started our home education journey on the 25/09/2017 , we decided to take this plunge because Leila started not wanting to go to school and  she became very unbehaved .

What kind of approach do you take?

As Leila is only 3 I’ve taken a very relaxed approach to Home education. I do a daily timetable but not all the time it goes how I plan, which I don’t mind .
I let Leila take he reins as such , on what she wants to do first  .

Where do the children do most of their work? and do they distract each other?

Most of her work is done in the living room or kitchen , unless were out and about on adventures . Leila had a baby sister who just wants to join in . So yes I’d say she gets distracted slightly but we try to include her sister on all our activities.

What is your favourite thing about Home Education?

My favourite thing about Home education is that I get to spend a lot of time with my children teach them about the more important things in life.

What subjects do you teach and do you stick to a timetable?

Our subjects we teach are :
- maths ( simple maths )
-phonics
-pe
-reading
-handwriting
-outdoor play
-messy play
-music ( as we’ve just got a piano)

What do you find most difficult and why?

At the moment I sometimes find it hard getting the right recourses and activities to do with Leila . But we are working on that as we are interacting with more Home educators .

How do you react to people asking about socialisation, do your children easily socialise and work well with others?

This is my most dreaded question .
I’ve had loads of people not agree with me Home educating due to the socialisation side of it . Leila is Brilliant at socialising with other adults as well as children. We have recently joined some Home education groups near us that do trips and kids sessions .

Have family supported your decision?

Everyone seems to have their own opinion on the decision but so far everyone’s supported my decision .

How do you incorporate Physical Education into your Home Ed days?

Leila’s always on the go anyway but we have PE as a subject we try to go twice a week . Which just includes simple things like jumping , balancing , running and skipping . We are also always out on woodland walks .

Do you plan and how  far in advance?

I plan ahead about 2 weeks ahead of myself . I don’t like planning to far ahead as every day is different and things can change in a heartbeat.

What's a typical Home Ed day like?

Haha everyday different and I like it but al our days start with circle time , which includes a days of the week song , we sort our Calendar out , Sing nursery rhymes and read a book .

Do you spend a lot of money on resources?

I’ve had to fork out a little bit in the beginning to make sure we have all recourses we need to get started but I will try to top everything up each month so we stay full .

How do you make time for yourself?

I have my time in the evenings when the girls are snoozing in bed .

What advice would you give to someone just starting their Home Ed journey?

All I have to say is , lots of people will have a opinion about your home education journey but you have to do what’s best for you and your family .. you know how to teach your children better than anyone else ..

Just take the plunge if you on the edge!
Go for it and don’t look back .
It’s been a great adventure for us so far .
