Home Ed Q&A

When and why did you decide to Home Educate?

I had been thinking about home education for a year or so before I officially started after being introduced by a good friend of mine to the world of home education mashallah. I officially started home educating my eldest October 2016 when she was 4 years 2 months alhamdulliah
I decided to home educate for many reasons
Mainly due to protect them from fitna as much as possible, to prevent bullying as being bullied can have a lasting effect on people even years in the future I myself was bullied and would never want that for my girls or any other child and To ensure my daughters receive a tailored made education that is suitable for their age and ability.

What kind of approach do you take?
I would say semi structured. I do structured work with my eldest and activities with both girls and we attend a few home ed groups alhamdulliah.
I follow the UK curriculum and EYFS as a brief guide.

Where do the children do most of their work? and do they distract each other?

My eldest who is 5 years old does her work on the dining table and occasionally lay on the bed and do flash cards or read. We do activities on the floor as well as play dough and painting etc.
My youngest who is 3yrs 8 months I do her activities on the floor with her, due to her being autistic being on the floor facing her is the best position.

Yes lol my youngest tends to come in the kitchen while I am doing structured work with my eldest wanting snacks or just to climb up and see what we are doing.

What is your favourite thing about Home Education?

I have so many but number one is you are their teacher,  everything they learn and know is down to you and that is so rewarding mashallah
Also being with them all the time.
What subjects do you teach and do you stick to a timetable?

My eldest has just gone into UK year 1 so now I have started introducing science and geography into her schedule as well as maths English and Arabic which we was already doing
For my youngest I do a lot of flash cards and playdough work as she likes these but I can incorporate English and maths with these.

Yes we follow a time table and we fit work in around their groups so sometimes we do work early , in the middle of the day or just before bed. alhamdulliah.

What do you find most difficult and why?

Fitting in enough structured work as we attend quite a few groups. so I recently cut down the amount of groups we attend.
Also being on time for things we are normally late unintentionally as due to my husbands severe disabilities and my autistic daughter, its always a rush or hectic to get out on time.

How do you react to people asking about socialisation, do your children easily socialise and work well with others?

I laugh and explain my girls probably socialise more than children in schools and with different ages, backgrounds and abilities.
The groups my girls attend vary but there is sports related groups to just outdoor play, my eldest loves to meet and play with new children. My youngest has autism so she is unable to socialise like normal 3 year olds do but she enjoys the groups we attend.

Have family supported your decision?

YES ALHAMDULLIAH . They have backed me 100% which makes home edding much easier as they have to help look after my disabled husband at times so I can take the girls to groups or trips.

How do you incorporate Physical Education into your Home Ed days?

My eldest does swimming on Mondays and halal ballet (no music or men allowed) on a Saturday alhamdulliah
Both girls attend a adventure play ground home ed group once a week. which is a lot of climbing and running.
They also go to parks during the week also.

Do you plan and how  far in advance?

I have just started planning properly and currently only plan for the next 2 weeks but I have done a brief outline plan for the year with the topic names we will cover Insha'Allah.

What's a typical Home Ed day like?

It varies a lot but we will get up have breakfast, get ready and girls will play while I tidy etc then we may leave to go to a group or do work and activities have lunch sometimes do more activities or learning and then some days my eldest has Arabic so then we go there come back dinner and then play again and then bed time.

Do you spend a lot of money on resources?

It depends, I go through phases of spending a lot and then other times not lol.
I try keep an eye out on bargains, I do love me a bargain!!!

How do you make time for yourself?

I don't lol , although this is something I'm going to start doing , my aim is to do a work out every evening, and attend some courses I've been wanting to do for a long time Insha'Allah

What advice would you give to someone just starting their Home Ed journey?

If I can home ed, anyone can !!!
Don't panic join home ed groups on fb or follow home edders on Instagram , these helped me a lot to not panic, gain knowledge and advice and make me relaxed and not stress out so much. Find local home ed groups to you and go along these are great to find other things happening in your area as well as fellow home ed companions.
